We have extensive capacity, dependable service and our considerable scale enables us to provide great value to our customers. We are fully equipped to provide the optimal solution for your business. Established in 1972 as an independent family-owned retail store, KTC has grown into one of Europe’s leading businesses dedicated to sourcing, blending, and packing high-quality, sustainably focused food oils. From humble beginnings, KTC (Khera Trading Company) was started by the Khera family initially as a family-owned store in the West Midlands. They wanted to provide their friend’s rapidly growing restaurants and curry houses with a variety of good quality, accessibly priced cooking oils, essential ingredients in creating good Indian food. The business flourished, as did their expertise and knowledge in the use of oils across a wide range of cuisines and food creations like pastries, confectionery and finishing oils for vegetables. As a result of their success, the KTC family set their sights on a bigger enterprise moving into a purpose-built 240,000 square ft facility in Wednesbury, the heart of England, where the business still resides today. The site now employs over 200 colleagues. KTC expanded for the first time outside of the Midlands, with a new site in Liverpool by the docks to service the huge increase in demand for oil sold in bulk. KTC rapidly outgrew this site too and had to find a new 165,000 square ft facility within 5 years. KTC acquired the Piquant business in 2019, the specialist manufacturer of dips, dressing and sauces. Piquant, since 1986, has supplied products to hundreds of food service, catering and wholesale customers. Endless portfolio company acquired KTC recognising the growth potential of the business. Additional capital was injected to support ambitious growth plans as well as strengthening operations, range and service delivery. An exciting year for KTC with firstly the acquisition of Cardowan Creameries Ltd, a specialist in plant-based margarine, bread fats and shortening with a strong commitment to sustainability. Cardowan Creameries supplies over 20,000 metric tonnes annually to manufacturers and wholesalers across the UK and globally. Later that year, Cardowan was followed by a second acquisition of Trilby Trading, one of Ireland’s leading importers and distributors of vegetable oils and fats. Trilby supplies in excess of 75,000 tonnes of oil each year to customers in Ireland, UK and Holland. In April, KTC joined Whitworths Food Group, the owner of Whitworths Bros, a leading British flour milling business with roots dating back to 1886. The move brought together two respected ingredient specialists – in oils and in flour- with shared values and a long-term commitment to quality, service, and investment across the food industry. By signing the manifesto, we pledged to help address issues relating to sourcing, engagement in governance, sustainable production from smallholders and strengthening communication on sustainable palm oil to increase awareness amongst consumers. We joined the programme in 2025 – in support of their efforts to advocate for sustainable palm oil grown in a way that prevents further deforestation. RSPO SG offers traceability back to the mill, with RSPO IP offering full traceability all the way back to the plantation. We are actively working to raise the sustainability standards of all the palm oil supplied by recent acquisitions to the KTC Group – Cardowan Creameries and Trilby Trading Ltd. Our 2025 goal is that all KTC Group companies share the same standards as KTC Edibles on palm oil. This process is already underway, and we are moving our palm supply chains to 100% RSPO certified sustainable segregated palm oil. All KTC Group Palm Oil will be EUDR compliant, and we will provide customers with all the data required to prove compliance. --- ### Page: https://www.ktcfoodgroup.co.uk/post/anti-bribery-corruption-policy Title: KTC Group | Anti Bribery & Corruption Policy Meta Description: The KTC Group Anti Bribery & Corruption Policy - Established in 1930 as an independent family business based in Scotland, Cardowan is a specialist margarine manufacturer, supplying over 20,000 metric tonnes annually to manufacturers and wholesalers across the UK and internationally. Over its 90-year history, Cardowan has developed specialist techniques and methods to create some of the best bakery products in the world that are also vegan and RSPO certified. The acquisition will take the combined turnover of the KTC Group to over £550 million and further strengthens KTC’s value-added processing capabilities and broadens the group’s product offering. Following the acquisition, KTC plans to build on the well-invested platform laid down by the Kyle family with continuing capital investment in the Glasgow site to further increase capacity and drive sales growth. John Kyle, Chairman and owner of Cardowan, said “As a longstanding family business with a rich heritage, it was crucial to find the right home for Cardowan - we have found this in KTC, who are an excellent cultural and business fit. This deal represents an exciting opportunity to accelerate Cardowan’s strategic growth plans and is a compelling addition to KTC.” Paresh Mehta, CEO of KTC, said “The purchase of Cardowan by KTC is excellent news for both businesses. We are excited by the opportunities that Cardowan brings to KTC to expand our offering and to service all our customers. I would like to thank John Kyle and Lesley McGhee for their support throughout the process and congratulate them on building a worldclass business. We recognise the importance of the company’s heritage and production methods that have been nurtured for almost a century, and we look forward to welcoming the Cardowan team into the KTC family.” Aidan Robson, Partner at Endless LLP, added “We are delighted to be supporting KTC with its acquisition of Cardowan and we hope this is the first of many acquisitions KTC will be undertaking over the coming years. Cardowan will help grow the sales and volume of the group, as well as broadening the offering to all existing KTC customers.” KTC was advised by Eversheds Sutherland (Legal), KPMG (Financial Due diligence) and Interpath Advisory (Tax). Cardowan was advised by PwC (Corporate Finance) and Shepherd and Wedderburn (Legal). --- ### Page: https://www.ktcfoodgroup.co.uk/post/ktc-appoints-gary-lewis-as-head-of-business-development Title: KTC Group | KTC Appoints Gary Lewis as Head of Business Development Meta Description: The KTC Group KTC Appoints Gary Lewis as Head of Business Development - This month, we have appointed experienced senior industry professional, Gary Lewis, as Head of Business Development for Oils and Fats. Launched by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), the European Palm Oil Alliance (EPOA), and the IDH (the Sustainable Trade Initiative) – the new manifesto was the result of the fourth Sustainable Palm Oil dialogue which took place in October 2022. By signing the document, we are strengthening our promise to source sustainable palm, while endorsing and implementing the four key aims of the manifesto across our operations. These four aims address issues relating to sourcing, engagement in governance, sustainable production from smallholders and strengthening communication on sustainable palm oil to increase awareness amongst consumers. The Sustainable Palm Oil Manifesto aims to dispel the myths surrounding palm and highlight the benefits that the sourcing and use of sustainable palm can bring to the planet and its people. Other organisations signing the pledge include leading organisations, charities and food companies from across the globe including Efeca, Ferrero, Henkel, Daabon, MVO, Alliance for the Preservation of Forests and WWF. Signing the pledge is the latest milestone in our extensive sustainability programme. In September 2022, we announced that we had achieved our ambitious target to offer only 100% segregated certified sustainable palm oil to customers as part of a commitment to the RSPO Shared Responsibility Initiative. We also recently became a member of The Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Roundtable and signed the Sustainable Coconut Charter - a voluntary framework which sets a global benchmark for sustainable coconut origins. In addition to this, we hold several industry accreditations and certifications, including The Soil Association, The Vegan Society and RSPO (The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). --- ### Page: https://www.ktcfoodgroup.co.uk/post/ktc-celebrates-national-fish-and-chip-day Title: KTC Group | KTC Celebrates National Fish and Chip Day Meta Description: The KTC Group KTC Celebrates National Fish and Chip Day - National Fish and Chip Day takes place on Friday 27th May - and we’re delighted to be celebrating this important event in the industry calendar! We hope that this year it’s bigger and better than ever, and can’t wait to see how chippies across the country choose to mark the occasion! National Fish and Chip Day was created by the National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA) following the suggestion of one of the finalist businesses of the National Fish & Chip Awards in 2015. NEODA members have an excellent relationship with the industry and this day further cements their connection, with many members raising awareness through financial support, prizes and engaging with fish and chip shops from around the country. As part of this, we have signed the sustainable coconut charter - a voluntary framework which sets a global benchmark for sustainable coconut origins. Established to address the production challenges associated with the coconut industry, The Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Roundtable is dedicated to achieving a fairer and more sustainable future for coconut buyers, processors and suppliers. Key goals include improving smallholder livelihoods and incomes, replanting trees, improving productivity, enhancing traceability and reducing deforestation and encroachment. By signing the charter, we are actively showing our support for the cause, and agreeing to a specific set of principles and goals in place to contribute to the ongoing development of more sustainable practices throughout the coconut industry. This also means working to address current production challenges, including senile (ageing) trees, natural disasters, disaggregated and complex value chain structures and producers’ limited access to market, technical and financial knowledge. Overcoming these challenges will help to address stagnating yields, low income and a low incentive to invest in coconut production. Gary Lewis, Chief Commercial Officer at KTC, said: “We’re committed to leading the way on sustainability, and being part of the Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Roundtable is integral to that process. “We’re investing heavily in reducing the environmental impact of our operations wherever possible – so we’re delighted to join other industry leaders as we collaboratively strive to make sustainable coconut oil the standard across the full supply chain.” The decision to join The Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Roundtable builds on our previous sustainability milestones. In September 2022, we delivered on our ambitious commitment to offer only 100% segregated certified sustainable palm oil to our customers as part of a promise to the RSPO Shared Responsibility Initiative. Our commitment to reducing our environmental impact is also reflected in our industry accreditations and compliances, which include being certified by The Soil Association, The Vegan Society and RSPO (The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil). H3: Gary Lewis, Chief Commercial Officer at KTC, said: This marks the successful achievement of its 2019 pledge to make the switch to RSPO certified sustainable segregated palm oil by the end of 2022, after signing up to the RSPO Shared Responsibility Initiative. Previously, the company had offered a selection of certified sustainable options, including segregated and Mass Balance, alongside a smaller quantity of non-certified palm. Over the last three years, KTC has been phasing out the remainder of these non-certified and lower certification (Mass Balance) palm products – replacing them with certified segregated sustainable options. To drive this transition, the company has been engaging with and educating customers on the benefits of sustainable alternatives, developing new products and proactively encouraging them to make the switch. Achieving this milestone has been a key aspect of KTC’s wider sustainability plans. The company has been investing heavily in leading the way on sustainable sourcing to achieve a greener future for the oil and fat industry, from the farms and plantations to manufacturing and delivery. In addition to actively promoting sustainable practice across all their palm oil suppliers, the company has specific goals in place for traceability. However, in other areas, the progress has been slower – and this is particularly true when it comes to the kinds of frying oils used across the sector. In this article, Gary Lewis, Head of Business Development for KTC Edibles, current president of NEODA and part of the UK Sustainable Palm Oil Roundtable, explains. He examines how the fish and chip sector, and the wider foodservice industry can make the right decisions when it comes to the environmentally friendly sourcing of frying oils – with a particular focus on palm oil. In the UK, the vast majority of chip shops use either palm oil or beef dripping for all their frying. From a performance perspective, both are excellent options. The downside is that both can have real issues when it comes to sustainability. The issues with beef dripping are the same facing the beef and dairy industries. Raising cattle takes up a lot of land and water, and it is an energy hungry process. Methane produced by cows is also seen as a significant contributor to global warming. In areas where land needs to be cleared to raise cattle, it can lead to the destruction of forests and rainforests. This compounds the environmental issues, by removing trees, displacing indigenous peoples and destroying habitat of some of the world’s most endangered species. Palm oil is the single most efficient oil crop on the planet. In terms of land to yield, you can get more edible oil from palm than any other animal fat or vegetable oil. The downside is that palm only grows in the tropics, and unsustainable farming practices can lead to the widespread clearance of rainforests – with the same devastating impact. It’s for this reason that palm oil use has become so controversial. Few outlets promote their use of palm oil. Instead, they prefer to call it ‘vegetable oil’. Over the past 15 years, and particularly over the past decade, there has been huge progress towards creating sustainable options for palm oil. This is, in large part, thanks to the combined efforts of organisations promoting sustainable palm oil, such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Working with industry, they have developed and implemented new standards for sustainability and certification schemes to ensure compliance. In this period, the global palm industry has invested heavily in overcoming supply chain and logistics challenges to improve traceability and availability of sustainably produced palm. 10 years ago, it was incredibly difficult to get hold of sustainable palm. Today, RSPO certified sustainable palm oil is widely available worldwide. More recently, an increasing number of palm oil companies have embraced No-deforestation, No-peat and No-Exploitation policies (NDPE), further improving the sustainability credentials of the industry. The result is that today, palm oil can be a truly sustainable option – as long as outlets make the right decisions when it comes to purchasing. In the UK, retail businesses and manufacturers have embraced certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO). As a result, 70% of all the palm oil used in the UK carries some form of sustainability certification. If we are to get to 100% sustainable palm oil, fast food outlets and fish and chip shops will need to follow suit and make the switch to certified sustainable options. The foodservice industry as a whole has lagged behind retailers and manufacturers – but we are starting to see real change. More and more fish and chip shops are making sustainability and traceability a selling point, and for outlets who understand and care about the issue, it has never been easier or more cost-effective to move to certified sustainable. There is an abundant supply, and there are sustainable options that are ideal for frying, such as the KTC Hi Fry range. When it comes to purchasing certified sustainable frying oil, there are a few options: Here at KTC, we have made it our mission to make Segregated the minimum standard for palm oil across the UK. As part of this process, we have already begun to phase out all non-sustainable products. By 2022, we will only sell 100% certified sustainable palm oil. We’re seeing a growing number of fish and chip shops who pride themselves on the traceability of their products. Many now display information about how and where their fish is caught, right down to the name of the trawler! Others name the farm where the potatoes used to make their chips are grown. We haven’t heard about any that talk about where their frying oil comes from! Choosing an Identity Preserved palm oil allows fish and chip shops to do just that. It offers complete traceability through the supply chain, including the name of the mill and the plantation. This is the gold standard when it comes to sustainable palm oil – and perfect for outlets who are serious about sustainability. Until recently, identity preserved palm oil has not been widely available on the market, but it is now. Earlier this year, we launched Palmax IP, a fully traceable, (RSPO) certified palm oil sourced from Daabon, a global leader in sustainable agriculture. In the coming months, we have plans to expand the availability of identity preserved pal oil products, to include both palm olein and high oleic palm. High oleic palm oil will offer significant performance benefits over standard palm, providing a real alternative to hydrogenated palm oil -which is being banned in the food service sector from April 2021.The palm we use for our IP products is grown at Daabon’s own palm plantation in Northern Colombia, before being milled in Daabon’s own refinery. The company holds a wealth of sustainability accreditations and memberships, including Rainforest Alliance, Palm Oil Innovation Group and RSPO certification – offering the absolute highest standards in palm oil sustainability.
